The Green Bay Packers selected running back Marshawn Lloyd from USC in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft (88th overall). NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah believes that the Packers took the best running back in this year’s draft class.
This running back class was not a strong running back class this season as compared to the last couple of seasons. During his senior season at USC, he played in 11 games and rushed for 820 yards on 116 carries and nine touchdowns, along with averaging 7.1 yards per carry.
Lloyd also caught 13 passes for 232 yards receiving and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 17.8 yards per reception. It will be interesting to see where he will be listed on the depth chart come training camp. It appears as if the Green Bay Packers upgraded the running back room this offseason and that is something they feel like they accomplished.
Freddie Boston of lombardiavenue.com wrote about who the running backs will be on the roster next season. Boston thinks that the Packers will only keep three running backs on the roster and they are Josh Jacobs, A.J. Dillon, and Marshawn Lloyd. That is what Green Bay did a season ago.
Freddie Boston wrote about having three running backs on the roster next season by saying:
“Lloyd is a home-run hitter with great athleticism and speed, and he has drawn comparisons to Aaron Jones. Lloyd is an ideal complement for Jacobs. Along with AJ Dillon, this is an excellent backfield.”
The fact that Green Bay was able to upgrade Josh Jacobs from Aaron Jones and get younger at the position is a huge plus for this football team. Will see what Lloyd does during training camp.
Marshawn Lloyd Has a Great Chance To Be the Number Two Running Back Coming Week 1 For the Green Bay Packers
Josh Jacobs will be the leadback in Week 1 for the Packers. The question will be can Marshawn Lloyd beat out A.J. Dillon for the backup running back job? Dillon was brought back on a one-year deal and he is a nice insurance piece to have.
However, a lot can happen between now and Week 1 of the 2024 NFL regular season. Marshawn Lloyd has more upside than Dillon at this point. A.J. Dillon is a nice veteran to have. Lloyd just as the third running back on the roster is an upgrade from having Patrick Taylor Jr. or Emanuel Wilson on the roster a season ago.
The Green Bay Packers would probably only keep three running backs on the roster. Those no doubt would be the three running backs unless something else happened. Marshawn Lloyd is going to have to blow people away during camp to win the second running back job. As for now, it is A.J. Dillon’s job to lose.
