News just broke that Juan Soto has rejected The Nationals’ latest contract offer. Soto and the team have been trying to get a long-term deal figured out for a while now, but Washington is now reportedly open to trading him. Soto rejected a 15-Year/$440 Million contract. Ken Rosenthal and Jeff Pasan are now reporting that the Nationals will listen to offers for the star outfielder. Can The Brewers even make a trade for a guy like Soto, and if they can what would it take?
Can The Brewers Trade for Soto?
The MLB trade deadline is August 2nd so if the Nationals want to move Soto this season they have less than a month to get it done. The biggest item that stands in the way of a team like The Brewers trading for Soto is money. The Brewers owner Mark Attanasio isn’t known for handing out massive contracts. However, Soto is a 23-years old and has already been to two All-Star games and won a batting title. He is the type of player that Attanasio could break the bank for. Soto would go a long way in improving The Brewers’ offense and make them contenders for years to come. He would also keep the Brewers ahead of the rest of the NL Central for the foreseeable future.
What Would it Take?
Front offices are already having the conversations: What is it going to take to acquire Juan Soto in the wake of him turning down a 15-year, $440 million contract offer from the Nationals? And the answer is: The biggest trade package ever. “A Herschel Walker deal,” one GM said.

Jeff Pasan says it would have to be “the biggest trade package ever” if the Nationals move Soto. They would want a secure future after trading away what they considered their future. In a competitive market, the Brewers would have to trade away probably four to five of their top prospects as well as a starter or two. It seems like too much, and it might be, but teams like the Dodgers and Yankees are also in on Soto. In order to compete with them for Soto the Brewers are going to have to give up quite a lot.
Does it Make Sense?
On paper, it’s easy to say that the Brewers should trade the farm for Juan Soto, but the likelihood it doesn’t workout is higher than it seems. The Brewers would be trading away their future if they give up guys like Brice Turang, Ethan Small, and Garret Mitchell. The Brewers will surely look into Soto just as every team will. However, they will have to ask themselves if they are willing to give up on the future they are currently developing.
