When the cornerback position was plagued with injuries, Brian Gutekunst decided that help was needed. On October 6th, the Packers signed Rasul Douglas, who taken in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. There was some confusion with this particular move as Douglas was not a well-known player who had bounced around the NFL since his arrival. Little did we know, this move would end up being one of the best transactions in the entire season. Let’s take a look at Douglas’ performance as Packer:
Strengths
Rasul Douglas’ greatest strength this season was his ball awareness, which aided him in making many plays in the secondary. In 12 games with Green Bay, Douglas amassed five interceptions, including returning two for touchdowns. Additionally, he was second on the team in pass deflections with 13. On top of that, he was also very good at finishing tackles, finishing fifth on the team in total tackles. It safe to say that no one expected these types results from Douglas this season. With the current salary cap situation, I cannot see a scenario where Douglas is not signed to an extension.
Weaknesses
With a player who performed so well without a full season, it is difficult to find many, if any, weaknesses. In Rasul Douglas’ case, there is going one challenge for him going forward. The stellar play that he showed this season, it is going to be expected that he continues that into next season and beyond. The hard part with assessing weaknesses for Douglas is that there is not much to go off of and compare. He has only been in Green Bay’s defensive system for four months, but it is a system in which he can thrive in . Things are looking positive for Douglas in the future, but retaining success will be his one true test if he remains a Packer.
Overall Assessment
Rasul Douglas was a breath of fresh air to the Packers’ defense this season. He took a lot of pressure off of Eric Stokes and created a three-headed demon in Jaire Alexander, Stokes, and himself. If Green Bay can retain Douglas, it would give Joe Barry a great steppingstone to take this defense to a new level. Packer fans should feel excited about the future of this defense. If this trio can stick together, Green Bay would arguably have the best secondary in the NFL, all thanks to the addition of Rasul Douglas.
