The Green Bay Packers are continuing to add players to their roster mid-season. The Packers are expected to sign defensive end Whitney Mercilus, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Mercilus became a free agent on Tuesday after being released by the Texans. The former first-round pick had spent his entire 10-year NFL career in Houston. Mercilus had 12 tackles and three sacks in six games with the Texans this season. The 31-year-old has recorded 115 quarterback hits and 57 sacks in 134 career games.
According to Fowler, Mercilus turned down more money elsewhere to sign with Green Bay.

Mercilus will add depth to a thin Green Bay pass rush group. Za’Darius Smith is on injured reserve following back surgery earlier this month. Chauncey Rivers is also on IR with a knee injury. In addition, Preston Smith only played eight snaps in Green Bay’s win over Chicago due to an oblique injury.
