Two Super Bowl wins in four seasons should draw any free agents’ interest. Andy Reid uses the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent success to his advantage when it comes to plucking free agents.
Reid has proven himself a winning head coach in his nearly two-and-a-half decade-long career with the Philadelphia Eagles and Chiefs. But his Super Bowl wins have come only in the Patrick Mahomes era. Mahomes isn’t cheap, and Reid has to recruit free agents, as money can be tight for the defending champions. According to Over The Cap, the Chiefs have just $409,000 left in cap space this offseason.
While one typically associates recruiting with college football, Reid has to do so because the Chiefs are on a budget. Fortunately for Reid, he has a convincing sales pitch. Former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill became a free agent this offseason.
NFL News: Andy Reid texted LB FA a convincing message
During his appearances on NFL Total Access Thursday, Tranquill said Reid texted him and the linebacker was lured on the possibility of winning an NFL title:
“I was really honored by the way the Chiefs pursued me, all the way from the front office down to the coaching staff. Andy Reid literally texted me the morning of [when] I was going to make my decision and he was like, ‘Think red. Think red. Think Super Bowls.’ I just felt really valued over there, felt like they really had a role for me and really wanted me over there.”
The Kansas City Chiefs have success on their side
The Chiefs are an appealing option if money isn’t the only obstacle for a free agent. Three Super Bowl appearance in four seasons and five straight AFC Championship appearances shows Reid and the Chiefs have a blueprint for staying near the top. If preseason rankings after free agency are any indicator, Tranquill has a good shot to win that Super Bowl this season.
Reid’s chances of landing recruits next offseason would then be even easier.
