NFL News: J.J. Watt’s time in the NFL is over. He has officially transitioned to the broadcasting booth to call games with CBS for this upcoming season. However, it is possible that CBS would have had to wait if JJ Watt chose to sign elsewhere back in 2021. A decision that may have prolonged his career.
J.J. Watt Nearly Signed With The Pittsburgh Steelers
During an appearance on The Green Light Podcast, J.J. Watt said he did consider the Steelers during free agency in 2021, but chose not to. Why? Because the team was in the middle of working out a record-breaking contract extension with his little brother.
“They were [on the list]. It certainly would have been awesome to play with my brothers, but T.J. was also going through the contract situation there, so the last thing I wanted to do was come in and take any money away from his contract,” Watt said.
Instead of the Steelers, Watt signed with the Arizona Cardinals but unfortunately dealt with tears to his labrum, bicep, and rotator cuff, all in one game, and missed 10 games during the season. He returned for the playoffs but finished the season with just one sack.
J.J. Watt Still Finished With An Incredible Career
J.J. Watt’s excellent Wisconsin Badgers career resulted in him being drafted 11th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. In 143 career games, Watt recorded 520 tackles and 111 sacks. He also had three career receiving touchdowns. He played for the Texans from 2011-2020 and played the 2021 and 2022 seasons in Arizona.
