Dak Prescott doesn’t want to take all the credit for his high-turnover rate last season. Prescott threw 15 interceptions for the 2022 season, a career-high for the 29-year-old Dallas Cowboys Quarterback. He did it while only playing in 12 games.
Prescott’s quarterback rating slipped to 91.1, the second-lowest of his career for a single season. His interception rate spiked to 3.8, nearly double his career average of 2. (His worst came in 2017, Prescott’s second year in the NFL.)
NFL News: Dak Prescott blames Dallas Cowboys drops
According to a report by Gabriel Trevino with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Prescott said not all of the interceptions were his fault because several drops led to turnovers.
“I know who I am, and you can go back and take away half of those off drops,” Prescott said. “I’m not saying it’s on the receiver, but if you cut that in half then we start talking about those, nobody is talking about it.”
Cowboys receivers dropped 33 passes last year, which is normal for an NFL season. While drops leading to picks aren’t necessarily the quarterback’s fault, Prescott must accept the blame for his substandard play last year.
Prescott said he thinks the offensive communication is better with head coach Mike McCarthy running the offense this year after Kellen Moore left for the Los Angeles Chargers. Prescott believes he can keep his interception number in the single digits:
“I won’t have 10 interceptions this year,” Prescott said.
If he can keep his interceptions below ten, it would be the first season Prescott has accomplished that feat in a complete season since 2018, when he threw eight interceptions. Prescott threw four interceptions in 2020, but he played in only five games.
Dak Prescott needs to throw more touchdowns
The interceptions are a problem, but what’s causing most of the ire is the lack of touchdown passes that accompany the turnovers. Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow threw 12 interceptions, but they threw 41 and 34 touchdowns, respectively, last season. Josh Allen threw 14 interceptions, but he recorded 35 touchdown passes.
Prescott threw 23 touchdowns to his 15 interceptions in 2022.
Cowboys fans won’t complain about throwing a few interceptions here or there if Prescott can find the end zone more through the air. Prescott hopes his receivers won’t drop those opportunities.
