Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy took a big risk this offseason with a coaching decision he made. One NFL writer isn’t sure it will pay off for the Dallas Cowboys and their playoff hopes this season.
McCarthy’s Cowboys made the postseason two years in a row. They won their first playoff game since 2018 in January against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road in January. However, they followed up their Wild Card blowout win with a dreadful offensive performance against the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.
McCarthy and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore parted ways after the loss. McCarthy hired an offensive coordinator but announced he’d call the plays next season. That’s a huge move and responsibility for a coach considered to be on the hot seat this season.

NFL News: Should Mike McCarthy call the Dallas Cowboys offense?
Cody Benjamin with CBS Sports wrote about red flags for NFL contenders this season. Benjamin thinks McCarthy’s playcalling style could cause the offense to regress:
“After a mutual split with OC Kellen Moore, head coach Mike McCarthy is taking over as Dallas’ primary play-caller. Though he probably deserves more credit for guiding back-to-back 12-win seasons, his older-school, oft-conservative tendencies could surface to a greater degree now that he’s directly in charge of Dak Prescott and Co.”
There is no question that McCarthy has excelled during the regular season as the Cowboys’ head coach. But one wonders if he should be back calling plays for the Cowboys this season. McCarthy hasn’t done so since he was the head coach in Green Bay–and he had Aaron Rodgers.
His 1-2 postseason record won’t be enough for an owner who feels sick after losses in the playoffs. The job of being a head coach and offensive coordinator could be too much if the Cowboys face adversity early in the season. The run-heavy and conservative approach could get McCarthy canned if Dak Prescott can’t perform the magic Rodgers did in Green Bay.
