NFL: The Green Bay Packers have had a massive amount of turnover this off-season. Of course, the off-season was headlined by the franchise-altering Aaron Rodgers trade that sent the four-time MVP to the New York Jets. However, numerous other veterans left the team this off-season.
Allen Lazard (Jets), Randall Cobb (Jets), Adrian Amos (Jets), Marcedes Lews (unsigned), Mason Crosby (unsigned), Robert Tonyan (Bears), and Dean Lowry (Vikings) all departed the team. The incredible amount of turnover has turned the Packers into one of the younger teams in the NFL. In fact, they only have three players on their roster over the age of 30 (Pat O’Donnell, David Bakhtiari, and Preston Smith). As it turns out, the Bears could be interested in one of those veterans who remain unsigned.
Chicago Bears Could Be Interested In TE Marcedes Lewis

Parker Hurly of Fansided highlighted a scenario where the Chicago Bears go after veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis:
If we are talking about Maxx Williams because he is familiar with the Chicago Bears tight ends coach, we have to bring up Marcedes Lewis. Lewis is going to be 39-years old and has played 17 NFL seasons. So, it makes sense that he would wait until training camp to sign. And it makes sense that teams will wait until they need a tight end to call.
Still, the Chicago Bears could be the first team to call, and they have easy access. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy comes from the Green Bay Packers, and that means spending a lot of time in the meeting rooms with Marcedes Lewis.
From 2014-17 he was with the Packers, and then he came back from 2019-2021. All of that time he was with Lewis. Even more, than that is assistant tight ends coach Tim Zetts. He was with the Green Bay Packers when Getsy and Lewis were there.
Getsy brought the assistant tight ends coach from Green Bay, so he was familiar with the room as a whole. Lewis may be at the age where he respects Getsy enough and also sees the Chicago Bears as a team on the rise.
Some players want to sell out for a ring, but Lewis could take a decent salary to stay in the division and take on the role of a mentor. Who knows, maybe a few extra sessions with Zetts could be his entryway into coaching after football if that is what he wants.
The familiarity with the coaching staff crosses over with the need. This could be done shortly.
Marcedes Lewis Made It Clear He Wants To Keep Playing

Lewis made an announcement on Twitter earlier this off-season. Lewis seems confident in himself and in his personal journey as he takes the next step after his time with the Packers:
“In love with the journey .. but more importantly what the journey consists of. Not being that great at something, failing, staying diligent, and then conquering that task .. starting a new journey, starting over, and then doing it again.
When you fall in love with the journey, naturally everything else takes care of itself, the goals just happen. You hit milestones, as a byproduct. Whether it’s lifting hella weight or running hella fast.
Don’t get me wrong, all that is cool, but not as gratifying as the journey and processes you go through to reach your personal best. Everything always feels better when you have to thrive in those uncomfortable spaces, and and earn what’s coming to you. I trust in that.
Bet on yourself”
Marcedes Lewis plays a position that’s thought of as a role for pass-catchers. However, Lewis banked his career on being a blocker. He wasn’t much of a target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2022. At 38 years old, he had his second-lowest year in total receiving yards, just 66. (He did have two touchdown catches this past season.)

Typically I never like to see a Packers great stain their career and reputation by playing for shitcago, but in this case I’d make an exception. I just want to see him play anther season to set tge record for seasons played by a Tight End. Lewis deserves the opportunity and Gutey is a complete idiot for not making it happen in Green Bay. I don’t care if he caught a pass this year, his value to the Packer organization would be immense and never more important. How do you go into a season with nothing but rookies and one year vets at TE, WR and QB? Lewis’ mentorship and value to the rookie Tight Ends and receiving core in general, cannot be measured.
