NBA rumors: The Dallas Mavericks have been making some big moves in the offseason. This has been highlighted by their re-signing of Kyrie Irving, who put pen to paper on a three-year, $126 million extension with the Mavs. They green-lighted a sign-and-trade with the Boston Celtics as well in order to acquire the services of Grant Williams. As it turns out, the Mavs may not be done just yet.
NBA Rumors: Mavs Linked to Clint Capela Trade — Again
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs are looking to trade for Atlanta Hawks big man Clint Capela — again. This is after their initial attempt to bring the 6-foot-10 center to Dallas failed. Apparently, the Mavs really, really want Capela.
Stein reports that the Mavs “would love if the chance to make another trade run at Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks materializes to this point. That opportunity has not availed itself to the Mavericks (h/t Hoops Hype).”
It remains unclear how willing the Hawks are with regard to parting ways with Capela, especially considering how they’ve already offloaded John Collins to the Utah Jazz earlier this summer. Losing Capela would leave a gaping hole in Atlanta’s frontcourt, which could lead to incoming fourth-year big man Onyeka Okungwu finally getting a starter role for the Hawks.
NBA Rumors: Mavs Looking to Replace Ex-Bucks Big Man
As for the Mavs, it is clear that they want to shore up their frontcourt. This is in spite of the fact that they already have the likes of Dwight Powell, Richaun Holmes, Grant Williams, and Maxi Kleber in their frontcourt rotation. Rookie Dereck Lively II is also in the mix, as well as veteran big man JaVale McGee.
One man who has been deemed surplus to requirements in Dallas is former Milwaukee Bucks big man Christian Wood. The 27-year-old, who played 13 games for the Bucks back in the 2018-19 season, remains one of the biggest names still available in NBA free agency after the Mavs refused to offer him a new deal. Wood seems to be dealing with some off-court issues, which may have had an impact on the interest of teams on him — or rather, the lack thereof.
