The Milwaukee Brewers were mentioned during MLB Insider Robert Murray’s podcast titled “The Baseball Insiders” podcast. During an episode titled “How far will the St. Louis Cardinals go to change market at trade deadline” he linked a two time gold glove outfielder to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Robert Murray links outfielder Tyler O’Neill of the St. Louis Cardinals to the Milwaukee Brewers.
It is quite rare for division teams to trade players of significance to one another, but Robert Murray is indicating that the Brewers like Tyler O’Neill and that they have interest in him.
“One team that I’ve heard, and I’ve said on the podcast before that likes O’Neill is the Brewers. Don’t necessarily know the likelihood there because that’s an in-division trade, of course.”
Milwaukee currently has Christian Yelich, Joey Wiemer, Raimel Tapia, Blake Perkins, and Brian Anderson as outfield options. Jesse Winker is on the team but is strictly a designated hitter and rookie Garrett Mitchell underwent shoulder surgery in April that in all likelihood will end his season. Acquiring O’Neill would help shore-up their outfield and also allow Anderson to play more third base.
Down on the farm outfield prospect Sal Frelick is a phone call away from a big league promotion, but he recently just returned from a surgical procedure on his thumb. Top prospect Jackson Chourio is in Double-A and a 2024 MLB debut is more realistic than this year.
If the Brewers do have interest in Tyler O’Neill health would be a big concerning factor. He is currently on the 60-day injured list with a back strain and overall he has struggled to stay on the field each of the past two seasons. When right he provides excellent defense and he has eclipsed 30 home runs in a season before.
Contract wise O’Neill is under club control through the 2024 season. He is making $4.95 million in arbitration this season. If an intra-division deal does get executed the Brewers would have part ways with some solid prospects in order to acquire him.
