MLB Rumors: Josh Hader is currently a free agent for the first time in his career and after years of waiting for this moment he is now in a position to command a record breaking contract for a reliever. Edwin Diaz currently has the largest contract at five years, $102 million.
So far this winter the market for relief pitchers has been very slow developing. One reason for this is because a few big name starting pitchers have not yet signed contracts. This includes Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery. Once these two sign the teams that missed out on these talented pitchers could pivot to Hader in order to bolster their bullpen.
When Snell and Montgomery will sign is anybody’s guess. With this unknown one MLB executive strongly suggested that if Hader doesn’t get an offer for a record breaking deal that he should join a National League west contender that is already all in.
One executive suggests that Josh Hader should sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB Rumors).
This off-season the Dodgers have made the most significant moves. They have signed superstars Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto to long term contracts while also trading for Tyler Glasnow and then extending him. We have also seen Teoscar Hernandez join Los Angeles on a one year deal, so if Hader’s market continues to develop slowly he could look to join a team that is already all in.
“If you’re Hader and the record-breaking deal isn’t there for you, why wouldn’t you join the Dodgers? Is there a better situation for any player right now? He would be a luxury, but they’re clearly all in.”
-MLB executive
It will be interesting to see if Hader gets an offer for a record breaking deal or if this MLB executives theory makes more sense in joining an all in contender on a one year deal.
