MLB News: Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff made his much anticipated return to the mound on Sunday, August 6 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his first outing back from injury he covered five innings, struck out nine batters, walked none, and gave up two earned runs.
To begin the game Brandon Woodruff accumulated five straight strikeouts. With doing this he tied a Brewers franchise record for most consecutive strikeouts to begin a game.
Brandon Woodruff ties Milwaukee Brewers franchise record against the Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB News).
Aside from Woodruff three other Brewers players have had five strikeouts to begin the game with one of those instances happening a few weeks ago. That outing was on July 26, 2023 when Freddy Peralta struck out five Cincinnati Reds to begin the game.
The remaining two players to accomplish this were Josh Lindblom and Steve Woodard. Josh Lindblom did this on August 6, 2020 against the Chicago White Sox and Steve Woodard July 29, 1998 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
As mentioned above Woodruff ended up with nine strikeouts over five innings pitched. He had been out of game action since early April and had made just two starts before being placed on the injured list. With 50 games to go he should get to make close to 10 starts for Milwaukee as they look to win the National League Central division or get into the playoffs through a Wild Card spot.
