The Milwaukee Brewers faced the Oakland A’s in Spring Training Saturday March 16 with a split squad, with their second squad facing the Texas Rangers. This is the fourth time these two teams have faced each other so far in Spring Training and the first time since the Brewers swept the A’s in a split squad double-header. While the Brewers were able to pull out both games the last time these two teams faced off, it was a relatively even match with a good deal of give and take. In fact, if it hadn’t been for Rhys Hoskins hitting a grand slam in the third inning of the first game, the Brewers may not have taken that victory. Fans may have anticipated the same kind of hard-fought, back and forth struggle ahead of the March 16 meeting. What fans got instead, was a shut-out.
Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland A’s meet again in Spring Training, and the result is a shut-out.
The Milwaukee Brewers have been dealt a difficult hand so far this year. After losing their manager Craig Counsell and bringing on Pat Murphy, the Brewers quickly had multiple major injuries occur across their roster. They recently announced their star closer Devin Williams will be out for a minimum of 12 weeks due to stress fractures in his back, and Wade Miley, Brandon Woodruff, and Easton McGee are all also out for various injuries. Despite these challenges, the Brewers have shown they are still here to play this 2024 season.
When the Brewers met the A’s again this week for the fourth time so far in 2024, they faced them with a split squad. Jakob Junis took the mound as the lead-off pitcher. Inning one saw a scoreless inning for both the Brewers and the A’s, but in the second inning Brewers newcomer Oliver Dunn (batting average .267) put the Brewers on the board. The third inning was three up, three down for both teams.
The top of the fourth inning saw Vinny Capra (.278) score, putting the Brewers ahead 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the A’s answered, scoring three runs. These first few innings of back and forth felt familiar, with fans flashing back to previous meetings, but that was about to change.
The fifth inning was a huge inning for the Brewers. The scoring began with Chavez Young, who made it on base because of a walk. Then, Andruw Monasterio scored. Then, Tyler Black scored, and Jake Bauers, and Gary Sánchez. This put the Brewers ahead 7-3. The Brewers weren’t finished yet, though.
They kept this momentum going in the sixth inning, and Oliver Dunn hit a homer and Tyler Black and Jack Bauer both scored, bringing the score to 10-3. The Oakland A’s managed to score once more in the bottom of the sixth, but the Brewers answered in the ninth inning when Luke Adams scored.
The final score landed at 11-4, a big shut-out compared to the hard fought battle of the previous double-header. In addition to shutting down the Oakland A’s, the other Milwaukee Brewers squad defeated the Texas Rangers, 5-1. If the Brewers can keep this momentum going, it should be a great season.
While some experts are skeptical and believe the Brewers have a slim chance of making it to the playoffs, they also argue it could be possible if the young players like Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, Brice Turang, Joey Ortiz, DL Hall, and Jackson Chourio play to their full potential. Only time will tell as we look forward to the start of the regular season on March 28.
