One of the hardest tasks anyone could have in the NBA today is the job of slowing down two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. As one of the most unstoppable forces in the league today, he’s expected to put up tremendous numbers on an almost nightly basis. Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, an offensive force himself, shared one strategy that helps take Greek Freak away from his comfort zone.

Kevin Durant was asked about the top priority when guarding Giannis.
He said the number one thing he tries not to do is give Giannis a lot of space (or a runway) because it can turn into a mini-transition attack. Said it was important to crowd his space tonight.

Taking away Antetokounmpo’s “runway” is always going to be easier said than done. Guys with a great combination of size, mobility, athleticism, and length like Durant can be effective in staying in front of Antetokounmpo, but even then, the Bucks’ do-it-all star still mustered 34 points on 13/24 shooting from the field against the Suns, albeit in a 114-106 loss.
In any case, there is a lot of sense in what Durant said about defending against Antetokounmpo, whose long strides can get him from the halfcourt to the shaded area in fewer steps than most other players.
