Former Milwaukee Bucks owner and long-time United States senator Herb Kohl has died at the age of 88. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but it was reported that Kohl was dealt with a brief illness before his passing.
Former Milwaukee Bucks Owner Dies
The news was confirmed by the Herb Kohl Foundation:
“Throughout his life, Herb Kohl always put people first — from his employees and their families to his customers and countless charitable organizations and efforts,” Joanne Anton, director of giving for Herb Kohl Philanthropies, recalled (h/t Bill Glauber of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). “Herb Kohl Way isn’t just the name of a street in front of the Fiserv Forum. The Herb Kohl Way perfectly sums up a legacy of humility, commitment, compromise, and kindness to countless people he worked with, served and helped along the way. Those values will live on through his Foundation.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kohl’s family and friends at this time.
Herb Khol’s Legacy
Kohl took over as the owner of the Bucks organization in 1985 after he successfully purchased the team from Jim Fitzgerald for $18 million. At that time, Milwaukee was in danger of losing the Bucks, which is why one of Kohl’s first orders of business was to keep the team in the city.
Kohl reportedly turned down an offer from the great Michael Jordan to purchase the Bucks in 2003, before deciding to sell his stake to Wesley Edens and Marc Larsy in 2014 for a whopping $550 million.
Kohl served as a U.S. senator from Wisconsin between 1989 and 2013 as a member of the Democratic Party.
