Former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Larsy undeniably made his mark in the franchise’s history during his tenure. The fact that he paved the way for Milwaukee’s 2021 title — their first after five decades — is a clear testament to this fact.
This is exactly why Dee and Jimmy Haslam have had some big shoes to fill since they purchased Larsy’s share in the team’s ownership earlier this year.
Milwaukee Bucks Owners’ Championship Declaration
Larsy, who sold 25% of his Bucks stake to the Haslams for a reported value of $800 million in April this year, left the team as an NBA champion owner. The Haslams have made it abundantly clear that they have every intention of replicating this feat in the near future:
“That desire to win is not just for us, although we’re incredibly competitive, but we also recognize how important it is for these communities to have a winning team,” Dee Haslam said, via Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “That gets us excited to be part of that story.”
As Dee stated, they are invested not only in expanding their highly successful sports empire (Haslam Sports Group also owns and operates the Cleveland Browns in the NFL as well as the MLS’ Columbus Crew SC), but they also want to win another championship for the Bucks’ ever-loyal fanbase.
Jimmy Haslam echoed his wife’s thoughts. The billionaire entrepreneur pointed to the organization’s decision to take a massive risk on Damian Lillard this summer as a clear indication of their willingness to do whatever it takes to bring home another chip:
“Coming from business to achieve success, whatever that is, you’ve got to take chances,” Jimmy said. “Wes and I laughed all the time when we agreed to do this with Dame (Lillard) – that does not come without a lot of cost and we’re rolling the dice again.
“The Bucks winning the title here in ’21, you probably couldn’t put a dollar value on it to this community. That’s what we want so badly to do for Cleveland. Not for our family, but for our players, our coaches and people that work for the Browns and our fans who have suffered for so long. That’s why we’re so dedicated to doing what it takes to win.”
The Browns haven’t had much success since the Haslams took over, though, so Bucks fans are hoping they will have a different story under their new part-owners.
