The bad news on Monday for Doc Rivers was that he failed to steer the Milwaukee Bucks to a win in his debut as the team’s head coach versus the Denver Nuggets. However, Rivers isn’t one to sulk in a corner after just one loss, especially since he still loved the way the Bucks competed — particularly on defense. Rivers even praised Damian Lillard’s attitude and effectiveness on defense when he spoke to reporters in the postgame press conference after the Bucks’ 113-107 loss to Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets.

While it can be convenient to point a finger at Lillard’s defense as to why Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was able to erupt for 35 points on 13/22 shooting from the floor, it’s not how Rivers saw it.

“Dame fought defensively. They had fight tonight. Cat’s out of the bag, they proved they can play defense. Now, we need to do it every night”
Defense has often been mentioned as among the reasons the Bucks decided to fire Adrian Griffin midway in his first season as Milwaukee’s head coach. With Rivers taking over the head-coaching job for the Milwaukee Bucks, the expectation is that he’s going to make the defense better. It’s going to be a work in progress, with Rivers still in the early stages of his time in Milwaukee, but at the very least, it seems that he’s liking what the Bucks are doing so far.
