During the past few weeks, the Milwaukee Bucks under Doc Rivers were scrutinized for going through a 1-5 run under the team’s new head coach. Now, things are slowly turning around, and Damian Lillard knows why.
After taking over the team from interim coach Joe Prunty, Rivers saw the Bucks only win one game out of six during their road trip out west. Now, Milwaukee has won back-to-back games against the Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets.
Milwaukee thoroughly dismantled Buzz City in a 120-84 win. In that game, Lillard led the Bucks by posting 26 points, four rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. Malik Beasley also made franchise history that night by having the most number of games with five or more three-pointers.
After that win, the Bucks followed it up with another against the Nuggets. That contest saw Giannis Antetokounmpo lead Milwaukee by notching 36 points, 18 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks. Lillard, meanwhile, had 18 points, three rebounds, and five assists.

For almost the entire season, the Bucks have been struggling defensively. Lillard shared what changed under Doc Rivers in a post by Gabe Stoltz on X:

The Bucks’ defense this season has struggled, especially after Jrue Holiday’s tenacity and experience on that end of the court was replaced by Lillard’s offense. From last season’s fourth-ranked defense, Milwaukee is currently 17th among 30 teams in the NBA.
The addition of Patrick Beverley to the roster via a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers may resolve the Bucks’ defensive woes, especially on the perimeter. But based on what Lillard has seen, it looks like things are becoming better for Milwaukee.
