After a 1-5 run that draw more eyes on Doc Rivers’ hiring, the Milwaukee Bucks finally got another win when they defeated the Charlotte Hornets recently. But before that, Damian Lillard shares their new head coach’s challenge that motivated the team to get the dub.
In that particular game, Lillard led Milwaukee to a dominant 120-84 win against the Hornets by posting 26 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, four rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. Malik Beasley added 21 points while Giannis Antetokounmpo dropped 15 points and 14 rebounds.
This match against the Hornets marks Lillard’s return after a two-game absence due to an ankle injury. His last game was in a loss to the Utah Jazz, a contest where the All-Star point guard notched 12 points and six assists in 37 minutes on the court.
Even with more losses than wins under Rivers, it looks like Lillard and the Bucks are finding their groove back. A likely culprit is a challenge laid out by Milwaukee’s new head coach to the team.
Damian Lillard Shares Challenge Laid Out By Doc Rivers Before the Milwaukee Bucks’ Win Against the Charlotte Hornets
Before the Bucks’ game against Charlotte, Rivers challenged the team to do something they’ve talked about. Lillard shares that challenge in an article written by Eric Nehm for The Athletic:
“Our attention to detail, how we helped each other, we were just more physical,” Lillard said of the defensive focus on Friday. Before the game, it was just a lot of conversation with our staff. We were watching film, and Doc just challenged us. He just checked us on what we say we want to do versus what we’ve been doing.
And it was just like, to be a team that’s considered a contender and saying what we want to accomplish, we gotta start acting like it. And I think that starts with us and it has nothing to do with anybody else, so it didn’t matter who we (were) playing tonight, it was important for us to go out there and set the tone and start taking the steps of being who we see ourselves as and who we want to be. And I thought that tonight was a good start.“
As it stands, Rivers’ challenge laid out the groundwork for the Bucks’ win over Charlotte. Add Patrick Beverley to the mix, and there’s a chance Milwaukee’s defense can get them over the hump and help the team contend for the championship this year.
