After losing their first series of the 2024 regular season, the Milwaukee Brewers fired back in their first game of a three-game set on the road against division rival St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers took a 2-1 victory over the Redbirds in extra innings to gain their 12th win of the season. These next two games in St. Louis won’t be easy, but if Milwaukee can pull it off and put up another win streak, this Brewers team may have a bright season ahead of them.
With the win, Milwaukee is now 12-6, which puts them in first place in the NL Central. They sit a half-game above the Chicago Cubs, and two games ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates. For St. Louis, they’re in last place in the NL Central with a 9-11 record. The Cardinals are four games out of that first-place spot the Brewers hold.
Milwaukee Brewers Take Action in First Series Against the Cardinals
Both of these teams would be scoreless after two innings of play. However, some interesting plays occurred in the first two innings of this ball game. First, on a bang-bang play, Brewers second baseman Brice Turang hit a ground ball to Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn. St. Louis shortstop fired the ball to first, the original play was called safe, but after an official review, Turang would be called out at first.
The second interesting play that happened occurred in the bottom of the second inning when Milwaukee’s catcher William Contreras tried to pick off his older brother and Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras at first base. The older Contreras brother gave a thumbs up in response to his younger brother’s great throw.
Tie Game Heading Into Extra Innings
During the top of the third inning, William ripped an RBI double down the left-field line to put the Milwaukee Brewers on the board first. Milwaukee would lead 1-0 for most of this game, until the bottom of the ninth inning. Reliever Trevor Megill walked Masyn Winn. Next, he gave up a single to pinch hitter Alec Burleson, with Winn advancing to third, there were runners at the corners with two outs. Megill would hit Cardinals pinch hitter Ivan Herrera with a pitch, which loaded up the bases for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Joel Payamps would replace Megill on the mound, and immediately walk to Cardinals designated hitter Brendan Donovan. A run would score and this game would head into extra innings tied up at one. During the top of the tenth inning, William Contreras knocked the go-ahead single past the infielders and into center field. With runners at second and third base with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, Brewers reliever Hoby Milner secured the win by striking out Cardinals second baseman Nolan Gorman.
William Contreras Big Day At the Plate/ Peralta’s Solid Performance On the Mound
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta went six innings on the mound, allowing just four hits, and two walks while striking out seven. William Contreras went two for five at the plate with both runs scored to his name. St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Gibson pitched six innings allowing one run on three hits, and four walks while striking out three batters. Game two of this series will be intriguing as DL Hall faces Miles Mikolas in what should be a fun pitching duel.
