The Milwaukee Brewers have made their first trade of the 2023-2024 offseason by trading Mark Canha to the Detroit Tigers. This deal was executed shortly before they had to make a decision on his $11.5 MM club option. Rather than decline it and be responsible for a $2.00 MM buyout they are receiving right handed relief pitcher Blake Holub in return.
Mark Canha has been traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Blake Holub.
News of the trade first broke when the Milwaukee Brewers social media team posted details on the transaction. They highlighted that Blake Holub is 25 years old, had a 3.03 ERA and eight saves in 48 relief appearances between Class-A West Michigan (18g) and Double-A Erie (30g) last season. Additionally he held opponents to a .226 AVG with 76 strikeouts in 65.1 IP while posting a 1.07 WHIP.
Thankfully, Blake Holub is not Rule-5 draft eligible until December of 2024. It also is likely that he will begin his Brewers career in Double-A with the Biloxi Shuckers, but could advance quickly if he performs well. 2023 was a breakout season for him and he now is in an organization that excels at developing pitchers.
As for the Mark Canha aspect of this he benefited greatly from a change in scenery a season ago and he played a big part in the Brewers success over the final two months. He will be joining a Detroit Tigers organization that finished second in the American League Central last year and had a 78-84 record. Spencer Torkelson is their first baseman of the future so he figures to slot in primarily in the outfield and designated hitter.
