The Milwaukee Brewers are one organization that very infrequently makes splashy free agent signings or hands out long term contracts to new players. On the other hand their division rivals in the St. Louis Cardinals do have a history of making deals and early on in the 2023 free agency period they have already spent $98.00 MM.
Starting pitchers Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn have all signed with the Milwaukee Brewers division rival St. Louis Cardinals.
Entering the off-season St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak promised to sign three starting pitchers to contracts. In 2023 their starting pitching staff was a glaring weakness and it played a major reason into their last place finish in the division. He now has kept his word by adding three veteran starting pitchers.
Joining the Cardinals organization are right-handed starting pitchers Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn. Sonny Gray received the largest and longest deal at three years, $75.00 MM. Both Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn were given one year contracts with 2025 club options. Kyle Gibson will make $12.00 MM in 2024 and Lance Lynn $11.00 MM.
Of these three Sonny Gray is the youngest at age 34. Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn are both 36 years old. Despite the age in 2023 Sonny Gray was a Cy Young finalist with the Minnesota Twins, Kyle Gibson led the league with 33 starts, and Lance Lynn saw a rise in his strikeout metrics and performance once traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Following these signings John Mozeliak said, “We were hoping to sign a couple of pitchers we knew we could count on for innings.” All three of those pitchers should do that in 2024, but the cost was $98 MM in spending. It will be interesting to see how these signings pan out for the Cardinals and if they can catch the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024 or not.
On the Brewers side of free agency they have re-signed Colin Rea, claimed Vinny Capra from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and have made a few minor league signings including Yonny Hernandez. Matt Arnold has swung a couple trades as well, but so far Milwaukee has not made the top headlines in the transaction department.
