The Milwaukee Brewers shutout the St. Louis Cardinals three to zero during their final match up of the 2023 regular season. Corbin Burnes handled the first four innings, Julio Teheran the next four, and then Ethan Small secured his first career save.
Ethan Small recorded his first career save during a 3-0 Milwaukee Brewers shutout victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Prior to pitching a scoreless ninth inning against the Cardinals on Thursday, September 28 the last time Ethan Small appeared in a big league game was on May 26. During that game he covered three innings in relief against the San Francisco Giants and gave up five earned runs. He was optioned back down to Triple-A after that outing.
In the minor leagues this year Ethan Small has been working almost exclusively as a bullpen pitcher. Over 38 games he has only been the starting pitcher twice. He’s had some high leverage situations with the Nashville Sounds (three saves), but nothing is quite like getting a save in the big leagues.
After notching his first career save Ethan Small said, “I needed a win up here (big leagues) pretty bad.” His time in the major leagues has not gone well. Even though he has only thrown 10.1 innings over four career appearances he has an 8.71 ERA and 2.61 WHIP during those outings.
Despite the rough looking numbers in the big leagues Ethan Small has been having some success over the past few months. As to what might have changed he said, ” I’m going after guys…feeling consistency in my delivery. That’s maybe something I didn’t have to start this season or last year. I simplified my stretch and I want them to put the ball in play.”
Hopefully this outing is something that Ethan Small can build off going forward. He is unlikely to factor into the Brewers post season plans so once this weekend concludes his year will be over.
