The Milwaukee Brewers figure to be a big part of Major League Baseballs trade market this off-season as a report recently indicated that they are open to listening on offers for virtually anyone. Winter Meetings is scheduled to take place the first week in December, so we could see several trades occur then.
One team that the Brewers have a trade history with is the Seattle Mariners. It is possible that they look to connect again on a deal and a writer for Sodo Mojo recently provided two trade proposals revolving around Brewers star reliever Devin Williams. Devin Williams was identified as a trade target due to the report of Milwaukee being open to trading anyone, he likely will be dealt before his team control ends after the 2025 season, and the Mariners need help in the bullpen.
Evaluating two trade proposals in which the Seattle Mariners receive Milwaukee Brewers star closer Devin Williams.
Milwaukee Brewers-Seattle Mariners Trade Proposal #1:
Brewers receive:
- C Harry Ford, OF Jonatan Clase, and RHP Walter Ford
Mariners receive:
- RHP Devin Williams
This trade proposal from the writer at Sodo Mojo has the Mariners giving up three top 30 prospects in exchange for Devin Williams. Catcher Harry Ford is their second ranked prospect, Jonatan Clase is ranked eighth, and Walter Ford 18th. Harry Ford is a unique catching prospect in the fact that he projects to have above average power, he is very fast, and has a strong throwing arm. Jonathan Clase is a speedy outfielder who hits from both sides of the plate, and Walter Ford is an 18 year old who was drafted 74th overall in the 2022 draft.
The biggest downfall to this trade proposal is the two biggest center pieces are not areas of need for the Brewers. Jeferson Quero is Milwaukee’s prized catching prospect who was just added to the 40-man roster and in the future should make a great tandem with William Contreras. Additionally Jonatan Clase is a MLB ready outfielder and the Brewers have a plethora of talent at that position currently. The quality of players involved in this package is good, but it may not be what Milwaukee is looking for.
Milwaukee Brewers-Seattle Mariners Trade Proposal #2:
Brewers receive:
- OF Gabriel Gonzalez, INF Michael Arroyo, RHP Michael Morales, OF Cade Marlow
Mariners receive:
- RHP Devin Williams
Similar to the last proposal this also has the Mariners parting ways with three top 30 prospects as Gabriel Gonzalez is ranked third, Michael Arroyo fifth, and Michael Morales 20th. Cade Marlow is a 26 year old left-handed hitting outfielder who has two MiLB options remaining.
The two headliners in this package, Gonzalez and Arroyo, are both teenagers with a lot of development left. Michael Morales pitched to a 4.53 ERA in A-Ball last season, and Cade Marlow got about one month’s worth of MLB action in 2023. Similar to the first trade proposal the quality of players involved seems like an appropriate amount for two years of control of Devin Williams, but with Milwaukee looking to repeat as division champs again in 2024 they may not want to execute a deal where the top two pieces are several years away from being MLB ready.
