The Milwaukee Brewers front office took a lot of heat during the offseason to extend a few of their star players. Willy Adames, Corbin Burnes, and Brandon Woodruff were three commonly mentioned names. Similarly their National League Central rival Chicago Cubs are in the hot seat regarding a contract extension for their star pitcher.
Starting pitcher Marcus Stroman is in the middle of a three year $71 million deal with the Chicago Cubs. He is making $25 million this season and has a $21 million player option for the 2024 season. Currently he is having a tremendous season and has expressed significant interest in staying in the Windy City.
“I want nothing more than to be a Cub. I kill myself 24/7 on and off the field to perform, to keep my body is position, to keep my mind in position. I truly believe I prepare like nobody else, so I know my worth.”
Despite significant interest from Marcus Stroman the Chicago Cubs are not engaging in contract extension talks with their star pitcher.
Marcus Stroman recently commented on a twitter post with the following statement:
“My agent and I made multiple attempts to engage them on an extension. Club wasn’t interested in exploring it now.”
The tweet that he was responded to was all of the impressive stats he has accomplished this year. It read, “14 Games Started, 12 Quality Starts, 1 Complete Game, 85.2 IP, 2.42 ERA, 1.04 WHIP.”
It will be interesting to see what happens with Marcus Stroman and if the Cubs do finally engage in extension talks or not. The Cubs are likely to be sellers at the trade deadline which complicates the picture a bit further.
