Milwaukee announced on Sunday that they placed Varland on the 15-day IL with a bruised right hand after taking this scary line drive in Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

The good news is that Varland got up right away and was examined for a couple of minutes by Head Athletic Trainer Scott Barringer before being taken off the field; Varland was able to walk off under his own power.
Varland said after the game: “I’m more mad at the slider location; felt good out of my hand just didn’t get there came back at me hit my hand, my chin, and my left forearm.” Varland wanted to keep going, but Milwaukee’s athletic training staff opted to play it safe and take him out of the game.
Varland’s X-rays came back negative so it sounds like he escaped with a minor injury, and that’s welcoming news for a guy who was impressive in Spring Training and had a 2.70 ERA to start the season.
