The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly calling up their second ranked prospect in outfielder Sal Frelick. Ken Rosenthal broke this news. No official move has been announced by the Brew Crew, but if true this would be the 23 year old’s Major League debut.
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick is reportedly getting called up to make his Major League debut.
Frelick was the Brewers first round draft selection (15th overall) in the 2021 draft. He dominated at every level of the minor leagues a season ago and worked his way up to Triple-A. His overall numbers in 2022 consisted of a .331/.403/.480 slash line in which he walked 52 times, struck out just 63 times, and stole 24 bases.
In Triple-A this season he unfortunately sustained a thumb injury on the same day that big league outfielder Garrett Mitchell hurt his shoulder. While Garrett Mitchell’s return to full baseball activity this season is unlikely, Frelick missed around six weeks of baseball after having thumb surgery.
Upon returning to the Nashville Sounds it took a few weeks for him to get going again at the plate, but he is now swinging a hot bat. Recently he had a career day at the plate that consisted of three extra base hits and six runs batted in. Overall he provides a contact oriented approach at the plate and also has a ton of speed.
The hope with promoting him is that he can improve the Brewers offensive production from their outfield group because outside of Christian Yelich the remainder of that group has been streaky. He should be a fun player to watch in the big leagues.
