In April Milwaukee Brewers rookie outfielder Garrett Mitchell sustained a shoulder injury that ended up requiring surgery. He appeared to injure his shoulder sliding into third base but remained in the game. A little while later he was seen in extreme discomfort after a hard throw. Initially it was thought that his injury and surgery would end his 2023 season, but reports are now saying that he could return in a limited role.
Milwaukee Brewers News: Garrett Mitchell could return in a limited role during the 2023 season.
Per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, there currently is not a lot to report on in regards to Garrett Mitchell’s progress. He is rehabbing and has not started baseball activities yet. However, the optimistic news is that he could return late in the season in a pinch-runner role.
Some folks #onhere have wondered about what’s going on with Garrett Mitchell, so here goes: There isn’t much to report as of now. He’s rehabbing and not yet doing baseball activities. A return late in the season, likely as a pinch-runner, isn’t ruled out.

With September rosters expanding from 26 to just 28 it is hard to imagine the Brewers finding room for a player who serves strictly as a pinch runner. However Garrett Mitchell does possess elite speed and could make a huge impact on the bases. It will be interesting to see if Milwaukee pushes to have him return in this limited role or if he just continues to focus on his rehab and getting ready for next season.
