Former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns had his introductory press conference with the New York Mets today in which he was officially announced as their president of baseball operations. This press conference occurred just one day after the 2023 regular season concluding. One hot topic that he touched on was the future of first baseman Pete Alonso.
David Stearns, former Milwaukee Brewers executive, had his introductory press conference with the New York Mets and discussed the future of Pete Alonso.
A part of his press conference was centered around how he grew up a Mets fan, the failed expectations of the organization despite a high payroll, and finding a new manager. So far he claims to not have his eyes set on one person to manage New York, but properly building a team and meeting expectations appears to be a top priority for him.
“I think what happened to the Mets this year isn’t particularly unique to the Mets. This is what can happen at times when teams are built predominantly through free agency and underperform expectations.”

As for Pete Alonso the expectation right now is that he is the Mets opening day 2024 first baseman.
“I think the entire package weighs into it. Pete is a great player, he is also good in the clubhouse, and he is also home grown. All of that matters.
“I know over the summer there was some trade speculation, and look I’ll just say I expect Pete to be the Opening Day first baseman next year. Pete’s an important member of this team, he’s an important member of this organization, and I think we’re really fortunate to have him.”
David Stearns has some immediately tough decisions ahead of him as he lives out his childhood dream in working for the New York Mets. It will be interesting to see how he does in the bigger market.
