The Milwaukee Brewers recently lost their former president of baseball operations David Stearns. He voluntarily stepped down from his high ranking executive position last fall and handed the reins over to Matt Arnold. Over the course of the next year David Stearns remained under contract with Milwaukee in an advisory role.
Once eligible David Stearns ended up signing a five year contract with the New York Mets. This did not take anyone by surprise as he had been linked to his home town team for several years beforehand. What was not announced, and is common among GM contracts, was how much the Mets were paying him. One report now has provided a close estimate as to how much he will be earning over the next five seasons.
How much is former Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns making with the New York Mets?
In Bob Nightengale’s latest notebook he discusses GM contracts. He mentions Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo’s two year extension and then compares the numbers to what David Stearns is making in New York. The estimated total salary of David Stearns contract is near $50.00 MM.
Bob Nightengale uses the wording “near $50.00 MM” when talking about David Stearns’ five year contract. Even though the exact number isn’t known, this is a very large and generous contract for a GM that will be making nearly double when compared to the next highest. Entering 2023 Brian Cashman was the previously the highest paid at $5.00 MM a year, Mike Rizzo second, and then Dan Duquette of the Baltimore Orioles third at $2.00 MM.
