The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly deep into contract negotiation discussions with top prospect Jackson Chourio. At 20 years old he is one of baseball’s top prospects and a long term deal could help benefit both sides.
Prospects signing long term contracts before making their MLB debut is uncommon. If Jackson Chourio and the Brewers come to terms he would be just the sixth player to do this. With reports indicating that they are close to an agreement there could be a few things that each side is still debating such as contract length, total money, how the money is spread out over over the length of the contract, and the potential for option years, opt outs, and incentives.
According to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the Brewers reportedly are in discussions with Jackson Chourio of a contract extension into the $80-$90 million range.
Jackson Chourio contract negotiations with the Milwaukee Brewers rumored to be in the $80-90 million range.
In a publication from Curt Hogg he indicates that “a deal in the ballpark of eight years and between $80 million and $90 million is likely, with the potential for options and incentives that could elevate the dollar amount.” If this is true a contract of this value would set a new standard. Luis Roberts currently has the largest contract of a player to sign before their MLB debut when he received six years and $50 million.
Assuming that Jackson Chourio makes his MLB debut in 2024 an eight year extension would lock him up two years past his initially expected free agency date. A deal of that length could play heavily into the Brewers favor if he produces at a high level. There also is the possibility that things don’t go well in which Milwaukee then would have surrendered a lot of money.
It will be interesting to see if the Brewers and Jackson Chourio come to terms on a long term deal before the start of spring training or not. If they wait and he produces at a high level in the big leagues then the cost to lock him up long term would rise.
