Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold made comments during Winter Meetings one month ago that revealed his desire for a potential reunion with free agent first baseman Carlos Santana. Santana spent the final two months of the 2023 season with the Brew Crew and Arnold used words like “wonderful job, great in the clubhouse, and would be a great fit anywhere” when describing him.
Until recently there had been no reports indicating that Milwaukee had reached out to Santana to discuss a deal. Robert Murray then revealed in a column that the two have in fact engaged in discussions, but he failed to relay where they were at in the process.
“Free-agent first baseman Carlos Santana has had conversations with the Brewers about a reunion.”
-Robert Murray
Outside of the Milwaukee Brewers two other teams have expressed interest in Carlos Santana.
Around the same time that Murray’s report came out another MLB Insider leaked information regarding Carlos Santana. Jon Heyman reported that the Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates are also showing interest. Coincidence or not the Brewers, Mariners, and Pirates are the three most recent organizations that he has played for.
“The Brewers, Pirates and Mariners — three of Carlos Santana’s former teams in the last couple years — are showing interest in Santana.”
-Jon Heyman
Of the teams mentioned the Brewers have perhaps the biggest need for a first baseman because Jake Bauers is currently on top of their depth chart at the position. However the Mariners and Pirates are hoping for bounce back seasons from players that they currently have including Ty France and Rowdy Tellez.
It will be interesting to see where the soon to be 38 year old ends up playing in 2024. He was a gold glove finalist a season ago and hits well from both sides of the plate. This puts him in the top tier of available first base free agents this off-season.
