The Milwaukee Brewers made one of their off-season decisions this week as they elected to place starting pitcher Eric Lauer on waivers. With a 2024 projected arbitration salary of $5.08 MM he was an obvious non-tender candidate this winter. This move took him off the 40-man roster, he ended up going unclaimed by all other ball clubs, and he was outrighted to Triple-A.

There is one major contingency regarding the future of Eric Lauer with the Brewers. This is the fact that because he has more than three years of MLB service time he has the ability to refuse the outright assignment to Triple-A. If he refuses this assignment then he will become a free agent.
Following the news of Eric Lauer clearing waivers fans on social media weighed in on the future of Eric Lauer with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Typical Brewers fans always bashing a guy who has one down year/injuries. Up to this year had been a decent starter for them. Wish him the best.
I don’t expect he’ll be with Milwaukee next year. Even with an arb year remaining. I think they’ve seen enough of his sorry act,… on and off the field.
I assumed they asked him if he wanted to take a contract for well less than arby, as he would never have been tendered. This is the type of player the Brewers target, but small market teams can’t risk $5M or more on hope.

The fans are overrating him by a wide margin. He was league average when he was at his very best, and way worse when he wasn’t. He also became a malcontent over issues that were not his concern.
Still, I’m sure they hope he takes the assignment. They are going to need guys to eat innings in the absence of Woody and not knowing what they have yet in Ashby.
Lauer could end up like Gio or Julio, doing well early on and taking on that spot starter role before diminishing and not being with the team later in the season.
