Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold and manager Pat Murphy recently discussed the news regarding Devin Williams being out for a minimum of 12 weeks with stress fractures in his thoracic spine.
Matt Arnold discussed the Devin Williams injury.
In reports from MLB.com and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Matt Arnold confirmed that Williams had pitched through some discomfort last fall and those same symptoms returned this spring. He also verified that Williams will be shut down from throwing for the next six weeks and that his timeline for return at the earliest is late May.
“Any time you lose a pitcher the caliber of Devin (Williams), it is always a tough loss… You’re going to get dealt some cards that are not face cards. You are going to get some low ones sometimes. This hurts. Immensely.”
-Matt Arnold
Pat Murphy discussed who might be the Milwaukee Brewers closer.
At this time Pat Murphy did not identify or single out one player who will assume the closer role. Rather he has a vision of a committee type of approach that will be driven based on the situation. He did indicate that Abner Uribe profiles the best as a closer and is inline for high leverage situations, but that he is lacking big league experience.
“I got this vision, of this fireman’s hat that we’re passing onto different relievers every night when they spin the wheel after a victory.”
-Pat Murphy
It will be interesting to see how Pat Murphy handles the ninth inning from Opening Day until Williams is able to return.
