The Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals had a pitchers dual going on Sunday afternoon at American Family Field. Both teams managed just one run throughout the games first 10 innings and then Washington took a one run lead in the 11th. Unfortunately some rotten luck in the home half of that inning denied the Brew Crew a sweep of the Nationals.

Rotten luck in the 11th inning denies the Milwaukee Brewers a sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the 11th Brice Turang started the inning off giving him self up via bunt. This moved William Contreras to third base and brought Willy Adames up to bat. Washington elected to intentionally walk him and got a lefty-lefty match up against Rowdy Tellez. Unfortunately a sharply hit grounder found the Nationals first baseman’s glove and he ended the game by throwing home and having William Contreras easily tagged out.

On that game ending play Rowdy Tellez was a few inches away from potentially winning the game. Had that ball got out of the infield and into right field Willy Adames at minimum would be at third base. Instead the game ended on a double play ball.
An inning prior Milwaukee had a great chance to walk the game off. With the game tied Mark Canha had an at-bat with the bases loaded and just one out. Unfortunately he was not able to have the same success that he had a night prior and ground outs by himself and William Contreras ended the inning.

Other notable takeaways from this game is that Brandon Woodruff put together another quality start. He covered six innings, allowed just one earned run, and struck out six. Through his first three September starts he has a 0.41 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, and .147 batting average against.

Additionally on a day in which several of the normal high leverage bullpen arms were unavailable, Andrew Chafin had a great moment where he bailed out Bryse Wilson with an inning ending double play. Also Thyago Vieira threw the 10th and 11th innings and despite giving up the winning run on a SAC fly he did not allow a hit.
Up next for the Brewers are the St. Louis Cardinals. They have a four game series against them before facing a familiar opponent in the Miami Marlins over the weekend.
