The Milwaukee Brewers are entering a Sunday series finale against the New York Yankees on April 28 with a record of 17-9. They have lost just one series throughout the first month of the season and have a league leading 12 wins away from American Family Field. They have managed to do this despite numerous injuries to key players.
Seven pitchers are currently on the injured list for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Before Opening Day pitchers Brandon Woodruff, Devin Williams, Taylor Clarke, and Wade Miley were all on the injured list. Woodruff won’t pitch in 2025, Williams needs three months to recover from stress fractures in his back, Clarke had surgery on his knee, and Miley dealt with a few different things during spring training. Miley ended up returning, making two starts, and then finding out that he will need Tommy John surgery. Other pitchers out include J.B. Bukauskas, DL Hall, and Jakob Junis.
Due to all of these injuries the Brewers have been piecing together a starting rotation and so far have used a league leading nine different pitchers. Bryse Wilson, who worked as a reliever last year, has been thrust into starting games. Tobias Myers was selected from Triple-A. Ultimately this has led to the bullpen, that has no true closer, being overworked. Despite this they are still winning ball games.
Christian Yelich and Garrett Mitchell are also sidelined with injuries.
Out of the position player group Milwaukee is without two key outfielders. Christian Yelich has been sidelined with a back issue and Garrett Mitchell a fracture in his hand. Yelich is progressing slowly and recently began doing some hitting and throwing whereas Mitchell has an estimated time to return in early June.
Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold says, “We’re trying to hold everything together with duct tape”.
In a piece from Bob Nightengale of USA Today he revealed some quotes from Brewers GM Matt Arnold. Arnold gave his thoughts on the challenges that he has faced to begin the 2024 season. He also provided one solution and that is waiting for everyone to get healthy again.
“We’re trying to hold everything together with duct tape. It’s almost like we’ll have our own little trade deadline when all of these kids get healthy. It’s certainly been a test for us, but every year has its new challenges.”
-Matt Arnold
Hopefully the Brewers duct tape remains intact long enough for their key players to return to a team in contention for a playoff spot. If they continue to get above expected contributions from guys like Blake Perkins, Brice Turang, Bryan Hudson, and a few others then it may be possible. The alternative is that Arnold will have to look at acquiring players by other means in order to replace his injured ones.
