The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs are amidst a four game series that is being played at American Family Field. On Tuesday, July 4th the Cubs defeated the Brewers in extra innings. During the game Chicago’s manager and first base coach were ejected. Following the game manager David Ross went on a tirade regarding the Brewers closing the roof mid-game.
During a press conference full of expletives David Ross went on to say “They were closing the roof to get rid of the shadows late. It was really frustrating.” Ross was implying in these comments that the Brewers manipulated the roof in order to further benefit themselves and gain an advantage.
A day later Brewers manager Craig Counsell spoke his mind on the matter.
Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell responds to roof closure criticism from Chicago Cubs manager David Ross.
“I understand that he did suggest that (it was shadow-related). It’s weather-related as far as I know. I don’t think the umpires would allow it to be shadow-related.”
“The roof, when the game starts, is the umpires and the grounds crew consults and I don’t know what that conversation is that the umpires had with the grounds crew. That’s the point of having a roof, I think, is to prevent it from raining. I know they’re sensitive about an open roof and rain.”
“I’m not responsible for whether it was raining or not,” Counsell said “I can’t control whether it was raining or not. I’m not in the roof business. I don’t want to be in the roof business. It’s a bad business to be in. You’re never going to make everyone happy in the roof business.
