On Easter Sunday, the Milwaukee Brewers took a 4-1 win at Citi Field to obtain the three-game sweep over the New York Mets. On Friday, Milwaukee grabbed a 3-1 Opening Day win, and the next day, they dealt with some adversity but overcame it all with a 7-6 win. The Brewers and a few other teams remain as the only undefeated teams in the league. They sit a half game behind the 4-0 Pittsburgh Pirates. On Tuesday afternoon, we’ll see the home opener for the Brewers as they take on the Minnesota Twins. For the Mets, they’ll start a three-game series at home against the Detroit Tigers.
Milwaukee Brewers Take Optimistic 4-1 Win, Obtain Sweep Over the Mets
During the top of the first inning, both Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich were both walked. Frelick was picked off at first base, and when Yelich was walked, he was able to steal second base. With a line drive single into left field from Willy Adames, Yelich scored making it a 1-0 game for the Brewers. In the next inning, with two outs and a runner on second base, rookie right fielder Jackson Chourio smashed a double near the right field wall. This double was Chourio’s first career extra-base hit.
The New York Mets would get their only run of the ball game during the bottom of the second inning. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor ripped an RBI single into left field, cutting the Brewers deficit to 2-1. In the next inning, both Rhys Hoskins and Chourio made some outstanding plays in the field to get some big-time outs.
Milwaukee would get some run support in the top of the fifth inning. With bases loaded and one out Brewers designated hitter Oliver Dunn lined an RBI single into center field. During the next inning, Willy Adames crushed an RBI double to right field to give the Brewers a 4-1 lead, and eventual win. Milwaukee reliever Bryan Hudson was instrumental in the Brewers 4-1 win yesterday, as he pitched three innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four Mets batters.
Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea pitched five innings. He allowed one run on five hits, and two walks while striking out two. With Hudson holding down the middle innings, this allowed Joel Payamps to get the easy ninth-inning save. Mets starting pitcher Tylor Megill pitched four innings. Megill allowed one run on three hits, and three walks while striking out four batters.
This team has already dealt with some drama in their first series of the 2024 regular season. With the benches clearing on Opening Day, there have been some suspensions handed out to a Mets player and manager. Besides the near brawl, Milwaukee is on pace to do some great things during this 2024 season. The biggest question however for this team is whether can they sustain this winning pace, attitude, and confidence throughout the season. It will be interesting to see if this Brewers franchise can stay hot on Tuesday and Wednesday.
