The Milwaukee Brewers made a statement in their opening series on the road against the New York Mets. Milwaukee defeated New York on Sunday by a final score of 4-1. With the win, the Brewers improve to 3-0 on the year and the Mets drop to 0-3 on the year.
This was the first series sweep for manager Pat Murphy. Milwaukee played with an attitude in this series and they are looking like a team that could be in for a fun season. As for the Mets, they are a baseball team that could be in for a very dysfunctional and lost season.
They could be out of things entirely by the end of April. New York is a baseball team that looks extremely bad and lifeless. Former Milwaukee Brewers front office member David Stearns may be for a rebuild with the Mets. Also, for the first time since 2014, the Mets were swept in the opening series and they were abysmal that season.
Everything went right for the Brewers and everything went wrong for the Mets. Milwaukee’s starting pitching was good in this series, but will see how well they play. It is the New York Mets after all and will see what they do against other teams.
The Milwaukee Brewers Proved That They Will Be In Contention This Season and the New York Mets Will Not Be
Any Mets fan who thinks that they are going to make the playoffs this season has to be beside themselves. New York could be very well one of the worst teams in the MLB this year and Milwaukee will be in contention for another National League Central title. The Brewers are by far a better-built baseball team than the Mets are.
Tim Boyle of Fansided wrote about the Mets’ start to the 2024 season by saying:
“Jose Quintana failing to get through five innings on Opening Day, Luis Severino dropping a dud in his debut, and Tylor Megill completing the trifecta on Sunday made for a miserable weekend for Mets starting pitchers. In terms of shocking human events to take place on Easter Sunday throughout history go, the 2024 Mets starting pitching staff performing poorly is hardly the largest jaw-dropper. The biggest criticism of all for the Mets this offseason by non-fans was the starting rotation. Fans would openly admit it was a concern, but thinking deeply enough into it, we could buy into the projected rotation being at least average. Perhaps that rhetorical purchase made by fans seeking optimism should’ve saved a receipt.”
The starting pitching is one of the concerns with this ball club. The Mets will no doubt be sellers at the MLB trade deadline and one of the names that could be traded is first baseman Pete Alonso. It won’t get easier for New York as they face the Detroit Tigers (3-0) next in a three-game set. As for the Milwaukee Brewers, they will face the Minnesota Twins in a two-game set starting on Tuesday.
