Milwaukee Brewers current manager Craig Counsell may become a highly coveted free agent this offseason. His contract with the Brew Crew is set to expire on October 31 and any teams with hesitations regarding their current manager, or teams in need of one, may look to persuade him to join their organization.
Up until this point the presumed primary reason behind why Craig Counsell would step back from the Brewers manager’s job was to spend time with his family. One MLB Insider is now suggesting that he definitely wants to continue managing and has his sights set on bucking one trend with his next contract.
Craig Counsell, current Milwaukee Brewers manager, wants to buck one trend with his next contract.
Across Major League Baseball managers struggle to make a substantial amount of money. Right now just six MLB managers are scheduled to earn over $3.00 MM in 2024, but across the NFL, NBA, and even the NCAA there are a large number of coaches who earn $10.00+ MM per year.
During the 2023 season Craig Counsell made $3.5 MM with the Brewers. Throughout the league most managers are not that fortunate and 15 earned less than $1.75 MM. Outside of Craig Counsell the only other managers who made more than $3.00 MM were Bruce Bochy, Bob Melvin, Buck Showalter (fired), Dave Martinez, Dave Roberts and Alex Cora.
All of this builds up to a report from USA Today in which Bob Nightengale indicated that it is important to Craig Counsell to help buck the trend of managers being under-paid. He also indicates that the hype to the New York Mets is overblown, but they are the most likely suitor to pay him for what he is worth.
“(Craig) Counsell definitely wants to keep managing, and most likely will stay put in Milwaukee with the New York hype being overblown, but friends say it is important to him to help reverse the course of managerial salaries.”
“He should get a bump in pay to at least $5 million a year, if not at least $6 million. If the Brewers don’t want to pay it then there is a certain team in Queens that will.”

It will be interesting to see what happens with Craig Counsell this offseason. Speculations have ranged from him taking at least one year off to now attempting to reverse the trend on managers being under-paid. There currently is no known timetable for when he might make a decision, but it will be major news across baseball once made.

Counsel has gotten the Brewers to the playoffs five times in his tenure so far. Even with a disappointing end, in my 46 year life this is an unprecidented run of success. Pay Him Immediately. The Brewers are lucky to have him. He is the best manager in baseball.
