Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold finally got a trade offer that he liked surrounding his ace and former Cy Young award winner Corbin Burnes. The Baltimore Orioles, who changed ownership a day before this deal occurred, won the sweepstakes by offering up LHP DL Hall, INF Joey Ortiz, and their 2024 Competitive Balance Round-A selection (34th overall draft pick).
Following the Brewers and Orioles trade surrounding Corbin Burnes being announced Matt Arnold issued a statement and answered questions from the media.
Matt Arnold issues statement after trading Corbin Burnes.
“The overarching theme is we’re excited about the players we’re getting back. The reality of our situation is that we had one year left with Corbin. I think Corbin had been pretty public about how this was going to be his last year as a Brewer.”
“And so we felt like the opportunity to help our team right now with players like DL Hall, who was outstanding the playoff last year for the Orioles, is very young and Major League ready. Joey Ortiz, who we liked a lot and a late first round pick, is very well balanced and this is an exciting deal for us.”
How will the Milwaukee Brewers use the payroll saving from trading Corbin Burnes?
Matt Arnold was specifically asked as to if the savings in payroll from trading Corbin Burnes will go back to this year’s ballclub or not. Here is how he responded.
“I think honestly we have invested in our ballclub and we’ve had incredible support from ownership to do that. It depends on the situation, honestly. I think we’ve invested in guys like Rhys Hoskins. We’ve invested in guys like Jackson Chourio. We’ve always had support and the ability from ownership to do those things at the appropriate time.”
What role will DL Hall have with the Milwaukee Brewers?
In the Corbin Burnes trade package the Brewers received left-handed pitcher DL Hall. He is a former first round draft pick who has found more success out of the bullpen in the big leagues as opposed to a starting pitcher. What role will Milwaukee use him in?
Per Matt Arnold he wants to talk with Hall about his role before commenting further. He said they envision him having success in either role.
