Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brent Suter was a fan favorite throughout his seven year tenure with the team. Unfortunately he was claimed by the Colorado Rockies last off-season as at the time new GM Matt Arnold tried to pass him through waivers around the non-tender deadline.
During his final year of arbitration/team control he went on to have a solid season with the Rockies. The Harvard graduate had a 3.38 ERA over 69.1 innings pitched. Despite the conditions of playing in Colorado he gave up just three total home runs all of last season.
As a free agent Brent Suter currently remains unsigned. Left-handed pitchers always tend to have a market. This is especially true when they have been effective throughout their career in which the 34 year old has a career 3.49 ERA and has experience both as a reliever and a starting pitcher.
Milwaukee Brewers fan favorite and former Colorado Rockies pitcher Brent Suter is garnering interest from eight total teams.
Despite a relatively cold free agent market Robert Murray has indicated that nearly every team in the league is interested in bullpen arms. He then went on to specifically mention Brent Suter and that eight teams are interested in his services.
“Left-hander Brent Suter is drawing interest from eight teams and a couple have expressed interest in stretching him out to potentially start games, sources say. Teams are impressed with his ability to get right-handed hitters out and how he keeps the ball in the ballpark.”
Robert Murray
It’s interesting that Murray makes a note that teams are considering stretching Suter out to start games. When he first arrived in the big leagues he was utilized frequently in that role by the Brewers and he started a career high 18 games in 2018. Over time he transitioned more into a traditional long relief role, but he occasionally was still used as an opener.
This is Suter’s first go around in free agency. He made just $3.0 million a season ago. With all of this reported interest it will be interesting to see what kind of contract he ends up getting and where he ends up going.
