Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams currently does not have a time table for return. The lock down ninth inning man is currently dealing with back stiffness and is in the process of getting an opinion from a spine specialist. Until then he is sitting out as a precaution.
If Williams is forced to start the season on the injured list then Milwaukee will be in need of a temporary replacement closer. This could fall on the arm of one person or be split up. Regardless here we will look at three relievers who could be forced to step into that role.
Three Milwaukee Brewers relievers who could be forced to step up amidst Devin Williams’ back injury.
- Brewers reliever #1: RHP Joel Payamps
In 2023 Joel Payamps worked his way up to the eighth inning set up role. This naturally puts him as an obvious choice to close out games if needed. All three of his career saves came last year with the Brewers.
- Brewers reliever #2: RHP Abner Uribe
Abner Uribe has the most electric arm on the Brewers 40-man roster. The 23 year old hits triple digits with his fastball and has a wipe out slider. He has a history of being a highly emotional pitcher, which could create some fireworks late in games.
- Brewers reliever #3: RHP Elvis Peguero
Behind Payamps last year was Elvis Peguero. He often was chosen to pitch in the seventh inning of tightly contested ball games. His ERA spiked a bit towards the end of the year in which he had a heavy work load, but given his track record from 2023 he would be a solid choice to fill in as a closer shoulder Williams miss time.
Devin Williams is scheduled to meet with Dr. Robert Watkins on Wednesday, March 13. At that time we hopefully will get more clarity as to how serious his back injury is and if it will cause him to miss the start of the regular season.
