Former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell is still making decisions regarding his coaching staff for the 2024 season. Andy Green was the previous bench coach for the Chicago Cub as he served while David Ross was the skipper. When Craig Counsell was hired Andy Green reportedly was offered the choice of another coaching role or a front office spot. He elected neither option and joined the New York Mets front office instead.
According to The Athletic others in the Cubs coaching staff including hitting coach Dustin Kelly and pitching coach Tommy Hottovy are expected to maintain their jobs. Until recently this still left them without a bench coach. Craig Counsell was unable to pursue his former right hand man with the Brewers Pat Murphy because he was promoted to manager upon his departure.
Ex-Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell has selected Ryan Flaherty to serve under him as a bench coach for the Chicago Cubs.
Ryan Flaherty, who is 37 years old, was previously serving under manager Bob Melvin with the San Diego Padres as his bench coach. The former big league infielder was not selected to take over as the Padres next skipper when Bob Melvin left. Instead Mike Schildt was selected and Ryan Flaherty was granted permission to interview for other positions.
With the Padres Ryan Flaherty had a special focus on hitting. He led their group of hitting coaches and oversaw offensive game planning. His experience working closely with star players such as Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Xander Bogaerts, and Fernando Tatis Jr is important to note because The Athletic also reported that he had was well respected in the Padres clubhouse and did not have an ego.
For Ryan Flaherty accepting a job with the Chicago Cubs will be a bittersweet moment because they originally drafted him in 2008, but he never made it to the big leagues with them. He spent four years in their organization before the Baltimore Orioles acquired him in the Rule-5 draft. Of his eight year career in the big leagues six of them came with the Orioles, one with the Atlanta Braves, and the last with the Cleveland Guardians.

It should be interesting to see Craig Counsell and Ryan Flaherty work side by side. Craig Counsell is well known for being a mastermind at managing pitchers work loads over the course of a season and maintaining a winning culture whereas Ryan Flaherty is more offensive minded. The two in theory should compliment one another very well.
