The Milwaukee Brewers have brought the currently injured Brandon Woodruff back on a guaranteed two year, $17.5 million deal. There is a mutual option for a third year that would increase the contracts total value to 27.5 million and his deal also features a full no-trade clause. This appears to be a win-win for both sides as Woodruff gets financial security while rehabbing back from shoulder surgery and Milwaukee gets to retain a homegrown ace for a reasonable price.
Brandon Woodruff indicated that he nearly signed with another team.
After the deal was made official Brandon Woodruff was made available to the media via a zoom meeting. During this interview he revealed that he nearly signed with another team. The team he almost signed with was not mentioned.
“There were quite a few teams that were in it to the end. I was close to signing there at the end and then the Brewers came in right at the last second, is kind of how it happened.”

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy on re-signing Brandon Woodruff “even his closest friends were shocked”
Pat Murphy also discussed the Brandon Woodruff signing, but he didn’t go into details regarding the negotiation process. What he did say is that it came together quite quickly and that Woodruff’s friends were shocked that Milwaukee was able to pry him away.
“I’m not going to give you timetables. But from the time all this happened, it wasn’t very long. Even his closest friends were shocked.”

What’s next for Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers?
Initially, not a lot from a playing standpoint. Woodruff has just started a throwing program and is taking a day-by-day approach as to if he will be able to return to the mound in 2024 or not. He does plan on rehabbing in Milwaukee and being around the team as much as possible.
“I’m going to be a big cheerleader this year. I look forward to that. I think it’s one thing that will help me grow mentally. And I can get to a spot physically like how I want to throughout this year. I just think being available for guys is going to be a big thing, and just trying to help out any way I can.”
“I’ll take it day to day, week to week, month to month, see where I’m at, at the end of the year. If it makes sense, maybe (return in ’24). If not, I’ll be ready to go for ’25.”
