The Milwaukee Brewers began the off-season with 12 arbitration eligible players. Based on MLB Trade Rumors arbitration projections those 12 players salaries would have accumulated to $70 million in payroll. Though transactions that have occurred this off-season there currently are just six arbitration players remaining with an estimated total cost of $38.7 million.
Arbitration players that have left the organization since the off-season began include Brandon Woodruff (estimated 2024 salary of $11.6 million), Adrian Houser ($5.6 million), Rowdy Tellez ($5.9 million), Eric Lauer ($5.2 million), Tyrone Taylor ($1.7 million), and Abraham Toro ($1.3 million). The lone arbitration eligible player to join the Brewers this off-season has been Jake Bauers.
Of the group of arbitration salaried players who are currently with Milwaukee only one has settled on a contract for the 2024 season. That player is Hoby Milner. Robert Murray reported that him and the Brewers settled on a $2.05 million salary for 2024. This is an increase from the $1.7 million that MLB Trade Rumors had him projected at.
The six remaining arbitration eligible Milwaukee Brewers players are estimated to account for $38.7 million.
There are six Brewers players remaining who are currently in the arbitration years of their contracts. This is important because MLB’s arbitration filing deadline is Thursday, January 11. If both sides do not come to terms before this coming Thursday then a hearing will take place in which an arbitrator will determine the players salary for the 2024 season.
The six remaining players are Corbin Burnes (estimated 2024 salary of $15.1 million), Willy Adames ($12.4 million), Devin Williams ($6.5 million), Joel Payamps ($1.7 million), Jake Bauers ($1.7 million) and Bryse Wilson ($1.3 million). Burnes and the Brewers could not agree on a salary a year ago and the ramifications of that hearing was a tarnished relationship. With Burnes having just one year of control left, and his odds of remaining in Milwaukee long term being very small, it’s possible that he goes this route again with the mindset of having nothing to lose and only money to gain.
It will be interesting to see which, if any, of these players signs before Thursday’s deadline.
