The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff is dealing with numerous injuries early on in the 2024 season. Closer Devin Williams is on the 60-day injured list with stress fractures in his back, Brandon Woodruff is recovering from shoulder surgery, Wade Miley began the year on the IL with a few different issues, Taylor Clarke had meniscus surgery, Jakob Junis recently landed on the IL, and Trevor MeGill sustained a concussion during a fainting spell while on the road.
What are the Milwaukee Brewers doing to combat these injuries?
Already we have seen Matt Arnold dig into his pitching depth and also add a few pieces. Minor league depth piece and 33 year old veteran Kevin Herget recently had his contract selected by the Brewers. Additionally Vladimir Guiterrez was claimed off of waivers and then assigned to Triple-A.
Recently Julio Teheran became available.
A season ago veteran Julio Teheran stepped into the Brewers starting rotation and delivered a string of quality starts to begin his Milwaukee career. He then had a few bad outings, was placed on the injured list, and was a roster casualty at the end of the year as the team was trying to line their pitching staff up for the post season.
This winter Teheran initially signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He did not break camp with their big league roster and ended up signing on with the New York Mets. The Mets recently used him to cover 2.2 innings and then let him go afterwards.
Should the Milwaukee Brewers pursue Julio Teheran?
Teheran found lightning in a bottle with Milwaukee last year, so bringing him back again becomes more easily justifiable. He additionally has familiarity with this coaching and catching staff but also could help cover multiple innings. With all the injuries that the Brewers currently have it may be worth bringing a guy like Teheran in.
