One of the greatest strengths of the Green Bay Packers during the 2023 NFL season was one of their biggest question marks prior to it starting: wide receiver. Of course, there were massive questions surrounding first-year starter Jordan Love taking over for Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. Fortunately for Green Bay, they had both of those questions answered at the same time.
Love put together the best season for a first-year starting quarterback in franchise history, throwing to a group of pass catchers made up of first and second year NFL players. Jayden Reed set the franchise record for most receptions by a rookie while Dontayvion Wicks is drawing comparisons to Davante Adams. Romeo Doubs had a solid season as well, tying for the team lead in touchdown receptions with eight.
Green Bay Packers’ Wide Receiver Christian Watson Looks to Figure Out Hamstring Issues
Prior to the season, it was widely believed that 2022 second round pick Christian Watson would step up to be the Packers’ number one wide receiver. After all, he is tall, he is fast, and he has all of the talent in the world to be a wide receiver one anywhere.
Unfortunately, Watson was plagued by hamstring injuries for much of the season. He missed the first three games of the season with a hamstring issue before putting up 28 receptions for 422 yards and five touchdowns in the next nine games.
He, along with the offense, were just starting to figure it out when he went down with another hamstring injury against the Kansas City Chiefs. At the time he went down in the game, he had seven receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns. The week before, Thanksgiving in Detroit, he had five receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Unfortunately, this particular injury cost Watson the rest of the regular season. He is working with a hamstring specialist this offseason to figure out how to prevent anymore injuries, but there are a faction of Packers fans that are ready to give up on him (probably the same ones that wanted Davante Adams cut after two seasons).
Regardless, while his health is still a question mark, the Packers have some questionable depth at wide receiver. Bo Melton and Malik Heath played well when called upon, but the fact of that matter is an injury or two can alter the course of the season in many ways.
The Green Bay Packers Meet with Xavier Worthy, Who Set the NFL Combine Record in the 40
On Saturday, Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy was the talk of the NFL Scouting Combine when he broke its record for the fastest 40-yard dash time. He ran it in 4.21 seconds:
After his record-setting run, it was reported that he had met formally with the Packers:

Worthy is projected as a late first round or second round pick. However, at 172 pounds, he is nearly 30 pounds lighter than wide receivers the Packers typically target in the draft.
Xavier Worthy Stats at Texas
Year | Receptions | Yards | Touchdowns |
2021 | 62 | 981 | 12 |
2022 | 60 | 760 | 9 |
2023 | 75 | 1,014 | 5 |

I could see Green Bay picking 25, then trading back into the first round ahead of Detroit. Would they use it for a receiver when they have other needs that they need to address? I don’t think so.
Nope. Just saw the mock that had them trading up for a CB in the first round and then trading Watson for (basically) the pick they gave up in the first trade. That might not have been so bad, but then this mock has them drafting 3 WRs late.
Not happening. The WR room is set with massive talent and even 2 or 3 injuries won’t hurt that GREAT depth.
They likely won’t even draft a WR and probably will grab a couple as UDFAs at best.
They probably will trade picks, since they can’t possibly roster 11 new players with all the new talent from the last two year, but they have many opportunities to trade up and target positions of need, and that will be their strategy.
