The Green Bay Packers are breaking the mold of what a competitive offense should look like in the NFL. For the last two years, fans and media personalities have clamored for the Packers to draft or sign a bonified number one wide receiver. Ever since Davante Adams forced a trade to the Las Vegas Raiders, it is something Green Bay has not had. In 2022, with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, the lack of a go-to threat in the passing game hurt the team.
In 2022, the Packers attempted to replace the impact Adams had on the team (123 receptions for 1,553 yards and 11 touchdowns) with Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Sammy Watkins, Christian Watson, and Romeo Doubs. Rodgers, true to his nature, preferred to target his favorite veterans in Lazard and Cobb, while Watson and Doubs did not always get the looks they needed to develop or that would have helped Green Bay win more games.
This year has been different. With Jordan Love under center, the Packers still do not have that bonified, proven wide receiver one, but the way that he has spread out his targets has made it so that Green Bay may not need one. In fact, it could be argued that the Packers have anywhere between five and seven wide receiver ones based on who could step up in any given game.
A few weeks ago, it was Bo Melton who became the Packers’ first 100-yard receiver of the season after spending most of the year on the practice squad. Dontayvion Wicks scored three touchdowns in the last two games of the regular season to propel the Packers into the postseason. Jayden Reed led the Packers in receptions and receiving yards, but did not have his first 100-yard game until Week 18.
Romeo Doubs Etched His Name in Green Bay Packers History vs the Dallas Cowboys
By no means did Romeo Doubs have a bad season. He finished with 59 receptions (second on the team), 674 yards (second on the team), and eight touchdowns (tied for first on the team). However, he was often forgotten by fans and analysts alike because he did not have any one game that stood out as a breakout performance.
That is, until the Packers demolished the Dallas Cowboys 48-32 on Sunday afternoon. While Reed and Christian Watson were held to zero catches each, Doubs exploded for six receptions (on six targets) for 151 yards and a touchdown.
His 151 receiving yards in a playoff game are the third-most in Packers postseason history:
- Davante Adams- 160 (2020 Divisional Round vs Seattle Seahawks)
- JerMichael Finely- 159 (2010 Wild Card Round vs Arizona Cardinals)
- Romeo Doubs- 151 (2023 Wild Card Round vs Dallas Cowboys)
- John Jefferson- 148 (1983 Wild Card Round vs St. Louis Cardinals)
- Jeff Janis- 145 (2016 Divisional Round vs Arizona Cardinals)
Doubs has proven to be a reliable target for Love, but he does not command the ball like a top wide receiver. Instead, he takes his opportunities as they come. While there are bigger and stronger wide receivers on the Packers’ roster, teams cannot forget about Doubs.
And he showed why on Sunday.
